Fr Martyn Hope and parishioners welcome you to our site.
Eastern Hills Anglicans is located on the southside of Brisbane between Morningside and Coorparoo, servicing Norman Park, Camp Hill and Seven Hills. We are a growing community of devoted Christians who seek the peace and comfort that comes from a deep relationship with God and Jesus.
We offer a relaxed, family focused and enjoyable Anglican service every Sunday at Camp Hill.
Note: babies and toddlers are most welcome to attend any service - we have toy baskets, books and pencils to keep them entertained and out of your hair during the mass. Our 8:00am service has a Sunday School and Creche for Babies and Toddlers.
Services are held weekly Sunday 8am (Family Eucharist) and 9:30am (Sung Eucharist) at 101 Watson St Camp Hill.
Fr Martyn's Message for the week
The Festival of the Ascension of the Lord
This Sunday celebrates the Ascension of Jesus – but how do we describe the event in our day. After all we have an understanding of the cosmos that is not the same as the Gospel writers. Obviously, the risen Jesus did not simply walk off into the sunset! Equally we find it hard to believe the literal interpretation depicted by so many mediaeval images of feet dangling from a cloud. Yet the extraordinary way Jesus disappeared from the disciples’ sight somehow did compel their attention. They were transfixed. This person – living, crucified, and risen – always enticed, intrigued, captivated, drawing all people to himself. But, as the angel stated to the Disciples, reminding them of the Lord’s own words - there is no point gazing into heaven. He is much closer to us now.
And Images of the Lord’s Ascension
Artistic portrayals of the Lord’s Ascension, even the great ones by the Renaissance artists, are never fully satisfactory – some are just plain ridiculous. There was one image ‘Googled’ from the web, in which we have an aerial view Jesus, like a Polaris rocket shooting up and the disciples below him staring up at the divine missile. Somehow this evangelical Christian image only makes sense if you are into the flat earth cosmology (See the image on the next page!). The problem is in assuming the Gospel language used to describe the event is literal rather than symbolic/theological. The Ascension is another dimension of the Resurrection of Christ. The Risen Christ is also the glorified Christ, who takes our humanity into the Divine life. We also need to remember the Gospels of the previous weeks in which Christ’s departure is transposed against his statements to be with and in the Christian Community – the Community of the Resurrection. Ikons do not pretend to be a photograph of the Ascension. They portray the Church in the images of Mary and the Disciples under the reign of the Risen Christ, who is present in the life and ministry of the Risen Christ.
Our Church Community
Eastern Hills Anglicans is one of the older parishes within the Diocesan of Brisbane, having been established originally as two parishes - in 1924 (Norman Park) and 1926 (Camp Hill). In 1990 the two parishes were combined to become the Parish of Camp Hill with Norman Park. In 2007 we changed our name to Eastern Hills Anglicans and have modified our services to meet the needs of our community.
We are a welcoming community of devoted Anglicans who are actively seeking new ways of workshop that are relevant to the needs of the community today. Our traditional approaches are still very strong in our services, however our young and vibrant Council is dedicated to modernising our services and ministry to provide a connection to God for those in the community who feel removed from the Christian faith.
Parish Vision
To be a vibrant Christian community which offers a place for reflection and growth.
What's New
Parish AGM and Thanksgiving Dinner
A team has been established to revise our strategic plan for the next 18 months. This will be announced at our AGM which will be combined into our Thanksgiving Dinner to be held on Saturday 6pm 16th February. This dinner will be your opportunity to see the revised parish direction and understand how we will achieve this, so please set aside this time in your calendars.
The parish reports will be available by Sunday 3 February in hardcopy and on this site in preparation for the dinner.
Promotions and Events for 2008
The Promotions Team have published a provisional calendar for 2008. Check out what we will be doing here.
New Service Times.
A continued focus on meeting our communities' needs has resulted in the development of a Family Eucharist each Sunday at 8am. This will be a short and simple service, ideal for new comers to the Church or for parents with young children.
We will continue our normal Sung Eucharist service at 9.30am at Camp Hill. Services will not be held at Norman Park on Sundays, except for festivals and major celebrations.
